Kilkenny Castle: closure and the visit you can plan

Notice dated 2 November 2026: Kilkenny Castle’s building is closed for filming from 2 November 2026 at 13:00 until 5 November 2026 at 09:30. Parkland remains open. Use this dated closure when planning an early-November visit; the normal building timetable below is separate from that interruption.

Kilkenny Castle has origins in the 12th century and was the principal seat of the Butler family for almost 600 years. Its Victorian remodelling is part of the visit, so expect a building shaped by successive periods. The park and exterior offer another way to approach the site, with their own opening arrangements rather than the building’s last-admission time.

For a city day, give the interior its own place in the schedule. Follow it with the Medieval Mile, which connects the castle and St Canice’s Cathedral. If your date falls within the filming closure, concentrate the city portion on other attractions and keep the outdoor castle stop distinct.

Admission and the direct booking route

The admission list consulted in November 2026 gives self-guided entry at 8 EUR for adults, 6 EUR for seniors or groups, 4 EUR for children or students and 20 EUR for a family. The seasonal summer guided offer is listed separately: 12 EUR for adults, 10 EUR for seniors, 6 EUR for children or students and 30 EUR for a family.

Choose between self-guided exploration and the seasonal guided offer according to how you want to engage with the building. Treat these as separate formats with separate prices. For bookings, use the service linked from OPW’s Kilkenny Castle page, named kilkenny.admit-one.eu. OPW does not recognise castle tickets sold by third parties.

The river trip featured here is a different experience: it offers castle views from a boat, with no castle admission or interior tour. Keep that purchase separate from any plan to enter the building. A view from the river can complement your visit without replacing the direct admission arrangement.

Building hours, park hours and access

The regular building timetable is daily from 09:15 to 17:30 in April to September, with last admission at 17:00. In October to March it is daily from 09:30 to 17:00, with last admission at 16:30. The filming closure stated above overrides those normal hours for its specified period.

November park hours are 09:00 to 17:00. Use that park timetable for an outdoor visit, and the building’s last entry for an interior visit. Arriving near the end of the afternoon leaves less flexibility for combining both, particularly if you also want to continue into the centre.

OPW describes accessibility as limited and asks visitors to use handrails. Only assistance dogs are allowed. Summer queues are possible, so leave some room around a timed onward activity. If your visit depends on a particular accessible route, discuss your requirements directly with the castle rather than designing the day around a general assumption.

Butler history and Victorian architecture

The castle’s long association with the Butlers gives it a different historical focus from the ecclesiastical buildings at the other end of the Medieval Mile. The state took it over in 1969. That modern chapter belongs alongside the medieval origins and Victorian changes when reading the building’s appearance.

For a wider chronological picture, the Kilkenny history guide connects the castle with the cathedral, merchant houses and city charter. It helps place the buildings in order before you walk between them. You can then choose which period deserves more time inside an attraction.

Castle views from the River Nore

The guided city boat trip lasts 45 minutes and starts at Canal Square by John’s Bridge. Life jackets are included and must be worn by all passengers. The castle is viewed from outside; castle rooms and their admission are separate from this river outing.

Combine the boat only with the parts of the city day that fit your schedule. Visitors primarily interested in interiors should prioritise direct castle admission, while those wanting a different viewpoint can choose the river experience. The city sights guide helps you balance the castle with the cathedral, Rothe House and art.
