Find your way around Kilkenny

Kilkenny is a city to approach through its streets as well as its buildings. The Medieval Mile connects Kilkenny Castle and St Canice’s Cathedral through the centre, providing a useful starting line for a visit. Decide first whether you want a guide to introduce the city, time inside a museum, or an organised journey from Dublin. Those choices lead to different experiences and different tickets.

This independent guide helps you make that choice without turning every stop into a separate excursion. Start with the tour comparison for walks and the Dublin day trip, or use the sightseeing guide to select places for an independent visit. For a route shaped around particular historical interests, there is a separate comparison of private city walks.

Choose the experience around your available time

If you are already staying in the city, a walking tour gives the visit a defined beginning. The introductory Medieval Mile walk lasts two hours and starts at 19 Rose Inn Street, by the crystal shop. A separate two-hour walk with a local historian begins at 1a Dean Street. The historian-led option includes stories of the city’s past and present and looks at the Castle and gardens from outside. Attraction entry is excluded from the introductory walk.

Coming from Dublin changes the shape of the day. The 10.5-hour outing begins at Hugh Lane Gallery on Parnell Square North and includes return bus transport, a local guide, Glendalough monastic-site entry, a scenic Wicklow drive and a sheepdog demonstration. Castle admission, meals and hotel collection are excluded. Choose it for a day linking several places, rather than an extended interior visit in Kilkenny.

River cruise and museum time

The 45-minute boat outing starts at Canal Square by John’s Bridge and offers views of Kilkenny Castle. Life jackets are included and must be worn. Its attraction is the view from the river; Castle interior entry and an interior guided visit are separate from this outing. It can give the day a different perspective after time spent walking through streets.

The guided Medieval Mile Museum visit takes 55 to 60 minutes, with further independent exploration time included. Its meeting location is just off High Street behind the Town Hall. The museum occupies the former St Mary’s Church, a different building from St Mary’s Cathedral. Choose the museum format when you want the building and its displays to be the centre of the experience, rather than a street route.

Food as a different introduction

The food walk begins at the Courthouse on Parliament Street and lasts 2.5 to 3 hours. A guide, all food and drink tastings, a tote bag and information from small businesses are included. Additional purchases and gratuities are extra. This format suits visitors who want their introduction to be built around tasting rather than adding food stops to a history walk themselves.

For a more specific focus on ale, continue to the brewery-experience comparison. Food and whiskey formats have their own tasting page. Keeping these choices separate makes it easier to devote time to the experience that interests you, rather than filling a day with several overlapping introductions.

Plan around the Castle notice

The published Castle notice closes the building from 2 November 2026 at 13:00 until 5 November 2026 at 09:30 for filming; parkland remains open. During that period, plan around outdoor views and other city experiences. OPW does not recognise Castle tickets sold by third parties. Its own page directs visitors to the booking service kilkenny.admit-one.eu. The Castle guide separates building access, park arrangements and ticket information.

Settle the journey and overnight location alongside the activity. Getting there covers rail, bus and airport connections, while the accommodation guide compares areas rather than individual hotels. Seasonal opening patterns belong in the planning too: a winter weekday can offer a different choice of indoor visits from a summer weekend.

Questions about your visit

Where should a first visit begin?

Use the Medieval Mile as the spatial starting point, then choose a street walk or museum visit. Leave separate time for any building interior you want to explore.

How should I plan a November visit?

Account for the dated Castle building closure and the seasonal opening days of individual attractions. The seasonal guide brings these planning considerations together.

Is this guide connected to the tourism office?

This is an independent guide to Kilkenny, separate from the city’s tourism office and the attractions described here.
