Choosing a route from Dublin to Kilkenny

Travelling from Dublin to Kilkenny is a choice between the train from Dublin Heuston, a coach from the city or Dublin Airport, and a road journey to your chosen address. Kilkenny MacDonagh is the railway station on the Dublin Heuston to Waterford line. An airport arrival and a departure from central Dublin need different plans, particularly when luggage and a flight connection are involved.

Choose the arrival point before comparing tickets. A station arrival can shape where to stay, while a short visit needs time for the route between the Castle and St Canice’s. The sights guide helps decide which visits matter before settling on a return departure.

Train from Heuston to MacDonagh

The railway timetable effective from 14 December 2025 includes Monday to Saturday examples leaving Heuston at 07:20 and reaching Kilkenny at 09:05, or leaving at 10:15 and arriving at 11:44. These are timetable examples for planning, so select the actual travel date when looking for a service. Allow separately for reaching Heuston from an airport or another part of Dublin.

Published online low fares start at EUR 9.99 for adults and EUR 6 for children each way. They depend on availability rather than applying to every departure or a station purchase. Online sales end 60 minutes before departure from the origin station. Compare the return service alongside the outbound train, especially if an indoor visit has a fixed admission time.

Airport coach and city bus alternatives

Route 717 connects Dublin Airport and Kilkenny. Its timetable effective from 7 April 2025 names airport Zone 16, MacDonagh Junction and Ormonde Road. One example leaves DUB at 10:00 and reaches MacDonagh Junction at 12:15. Use the current departure information for your flight date and stop location; advance booking is recommended for a seat.

Route 600 connects Dublin City and Kilkenny, with Ormonde Road and McDonagh Junction stops. Reaching the airport through this network involves a change. Published fares effective from 11 May 2026 give an adult single of EUR 14 between Kilkenny and Dublin City, or EUR 20 for the airport journey. Compare the full connection and its interchange when deciding between a city coach and the airport route.

Taxi and transfer from Dublin Airport (DUB)

A taxi or arranged transfer is an alternative when the final address matters more than a railway or coach stop. Set the destination as your accommodation address in Kilkenny, and include the flight arrival time and luggage when requesting a quote. For a family or several travellers, compare the total vehicle quote with the tickets and onward travel needed for a public transport journey.

Agree the meeting point, passenger capacity and arrangements for a delayed flight before travelling. Leave time for airport arrivals formalities rather than treating the landing time as the road departure. A transfer quote should describe the actual journey and any requested extras; use that quote for the budget.

Reserve your transfer from Dublin Airport (DUB) to Kilkenny in advance on Kiwitaxi.

Car rental and parking

A car can serve a plan that includes rural places such as Inistioge and Woodstock. Decide which countryside visits belong in the itinerary before arranging a vehicle for a city stay. For accommodation outside Kilkenny, work out the evening return as well as the daytime outing; public transport connections may also form part of that plan.

For the city, compare the parking arrangements at the chosen address with the places you intend to visit. Read the signs for the actual parking area, its maximum stay and payment rules. Maudlin Street has an announced closure on four nights from the evening of 2 November to the morning of 6 November 2026, from 22:00 to 06:00, between John Street Upper and Dublin Road. Allow for the signed diversion.

An organised return day instead

The guided day trip departs from O’Connell Street Upper in Dublin city and includes return transport, guides and walking tours in Kilkenny and Glendalough. It is a sightseeing day rather than an airport transfer or a one-way ticket to accommodation. Lunch, hotel pickup and Castle admission are excluded. See the Dublin day-trip comparison for that style of visit.

Kilkenny Castle has a dated building closure from 2 November 2026 at 13:00 until 5 November 2026 at 09:30; the parkland remains open. Put this restriction beside the travel dates when planning an interior visit. The Castle guide explains building access separately from an outside walk.
